As Summer Approaches

In a couple of weeks, it will be June. Soon, the balmy and sweaty nights of summer will be here again. I am hoping that this year's summer won't be as hot as the summer of 2010, where we had about 52 days that were in the 90 degrees or higher. As this summer approaches, I've been thinking a lot of how I've spent my summers when I was younger. How about you? Do you have any good memories of your past summers?

This photo was taken at my front garden last year. I had about five Sunflowers all blooming at the same time. I borrowed this quote from here.

When I was a kid, summers were spent:
  • going out with my friends to have picnics and swimming at a nearby river
  • napping on hot afternoons
  • reading novels with my sister
  • eating oranges, mabolo, santol and green mangoes at my grandpa's farm
  • playing hide-and-seek, telling scary stories with the cousins at night
  • having stick fights with my brother (we pretend they're swords)
  • riding my bike
  • visiting the rice fields with my parents
  • cooking with wood fire at our farm house
  • catching up while drinking cold soft drinks or cold calamansi juice with the cousins on lazy, hot afternoons
  • writing poetry
  • learning to play the guitar
  • watching fireflies at dusk and imagining that an enchanted world exists at our backyard's old mango tree
I really enjoyed my summers in the Philippines, and I feel so lucky to have such wonderful memories. Now, it's time to make another memorable summer. Cheers to a fun filled summer!

  6. I can think of a cheerier flower than a sunflower!

    A DAY WITHOUT YELLOW

A day without yellow is drear.
(At least, that’s what I think, my dear.)
    Without the gold touch,
    There just isn’t much
To give life a sparkle—that’s clear!

  8. Hi Kayni... what a beautiful sunflower. It's my favourite! I have lots of great summer memories, especially when I was younger. One of my fondest memories is of me and my cousins shaking my grandfather's guava trees and waiting for the fruits to fall on the ground. We weren't allowed to climb trees at that time :)

    Have a great week ahead.

  12. Summers were fun, when I was growing up. We'd go to the beach; ate makopa dipped in vinegar, salt and chili; played in my parent's rice farm...ahh I could go on and on. I wish my son will have fond memories of his summers too =)

  14. I enjoyed reminiscing my happy childhood as I went through your list. I looked forward most to eating and playing at the streets during summer break when I was still in gradeschool.
